Welcome to Heading Home K9 Rescue!

Did you see a dog that caught your eye? Ready to start the adoption process? Happy to help! Feel free to email the dog's listed contact with any questions you have...the dogs live in our homes with us so we know them very well. Please also download and fill out the preadopt application (Heading Home K9 Rescue Preadopt Application) and email it in to the listed contact for the dog(s) you are interested in. We read through the application, check references, and once approved (we aim for 24-48 hours to approve or deny), we set up a visit with you and the foster home or direct you to an adoption event to meet the dog(s). Fosters are more than happy to answer questions that arise. We all want a good match the first time, and a successful experience for the adopter and the dog.
After meeting, you can choose to outright adopt, or do a foster to adopt, where you complete an extra form and gain a 1-2 week period to see how the dog adjusts, and if the fit between the dog and your home is right. We encourage adopters to give it a MINIMUM of 3 days. Returning a dog before that period means it never had a chance to settle in and show you what the true personality is like. Moving dogs between homes is stressful and not in the dog's best interests. We are here to support you after adoption also, answering questions and helping make the process as positive as we can. We highly recommend you read the tips in this packet (Adopting 101) before bringing your new dog home...it will help greatly ease the transition and make it a positive experience for everyone!

Our adoption fees are non-negotiable and average about $350 which includes their vet work-spay/neuter, vaccinations, heartworm testing (if old enough), and deworming. Often the vet costs far exceed the adoption fee, especially on our special needs dogs. We rely on adoption fees to be able to continue to rescue more dogs in need.

NEXT PET ADOPTION-- Our next pet adoption will be on Sunday December 31st from 12-2 at the Bloomington Chuck and Dons

REMINDER: It is always a good idea to email the contact listed in each dog's bio to find out of s/he will be attending an adoption event before making the drive. Many dogs do not attend the adoption events.

Want to help support the dogs of Heading Home K9 Rescue without ever leaving your house....not even leaving your computer?!--- Check out our Amazon.com wish list here! We have compiled a short list of our favorite and most used supplies like toys, leashes/collars, bones, etc. You can purchase online and it will ship right to us. Thank you for helping make the holiday special for all the wonderful dogs at HHK9!

HEADING HOME DOGS LOOKING FOR HOMES:

Name: Abby
Breed: Golden Retriever Cross
Age: Adult
Gender: Female
Description: Abby is a 3-4 year old female Golden Retriever mix, coming to rescue as an owner surrender due to too many dogs. She is a good natured, friendly dog, walks well on the leash and sure loves her walks. She is crate trained and quickly learning the house training, and sure seems to enjoy the company of the kids and other pets in her home. She needs further training, as she was not spent individual time with, but with some time and attention she is blossoming into this really amazing dog. She gets to us from her foster out of state December 17th and we are hoping to find a foster to adopt, someone to do the application and be approved and pick her up that day to do a 2 week trial period to see if she is the right match. Her adoption fee of $400 plus tax covers spay, shots, worming, heartworm test, and microchip. She's a fantastic dog. Since she came from a rural home prior, priority is given to an adopter with yard space and another dog.

Requirements: No special requirements

You can email kladams4545@gmail.com with questions and for a preadopt application. This dog has been spayed/neutered, vaccinated as age appropriate, tested for heartworm disease if age appropriate, and dewormed.

Name: Bailey (Adoption Pending!)

Age: Young Adult
Gender: Male
Description: Bailey is a young adult male Lab/Shepherd mix, raised with kids, cats, and another dog, seeking a new home after his owners had to move and couldn't bring him along. He is house trained, crate trained, and a social and well adjusted dog who is seeking another family to include him in their lives. He's about 45 pounds, loves walks and car rides, does well being out and about, and politely enjoys meeting new people. Bailey is available to adopt November 26th.

Name: Bane`
Breed: Akita
Age: Adult
Gender: Male
Description: Bane is a stunning Akita who defines the Akita breed…loyal, watchful, a dash of a stubborn streak, and incredibly beautiful. Bane’s tough dog exterior (and his big bark!) hides a soft soul who loves his people beyond measure. Once he bonds, you have a best friend for life. Bane is housetrained on a schedule, crates for the workday (though hates the crate and it’s a bit of a fight to get him in there), and minds his manners well in the house. He is a barker when appropriate so is not suitable to a home with shared walls (apartment, townhome, etc). Bane is an active dog who loves his walks and playtime but settles nicely once he is tired out. He is not good with cats or small animals. He is tolerant of other dogs though would be best in a home as an only dog or with a submissive, female who will respect his space. Like most Akitas, Bane has a stubborn, dominant streak and needs an experienced handler who will firmly, yet lovingly set the rules and boundaries for him. He toes the line perfectly once he knows what is expected of him but he needs a handler who can control a powerful, intelligent dog. Please do your research on this breed before considering adopting Bane, Akitas are fabulous companions in the right home but they are not the dog for everyone. Bane is a beautiful representation of his breed in both looks and temperament.

Requirements: No cats. Experienced Home Required.

Name: Banshee
Breed: German Shepherd
Age: Young Adult
Gender: Female
Description: Banshee is a fun-loving, energetic, wickedly smart Shepherd girl with a passion for fetch and a love of water. That's right, there is nothing this girl loves more than racing through the kiddie pools and ponds with a ball in her mouth and a grin on her face. Banshee is working on her manners with other dogs, not good with cats, and good with older kids who can take an active role in her training. She is working on her housetraining, crates for the workday, and learning her house manners. She appears to have been an outside dog before so the house is very new to her but she's learning how to behave. A home without shared walls is ideal as she likes to sing the song of her people (howl and bark) when she is bored or crated. Banshee loves her people, loves to learn, and is picking up training in a flash. She needs some more training and continued work (leash manners especially leave a lot to be desired!), but her mind is sharp an ready for someone to put the time in to working with her. She is a high energy, high drive dog who needs an outlet for that energy. She would be an absolutely outstanding sport dog (flyball, agility, etc) or running partner.

Requirements: No cats

Name: Belle (Adoption Pending!)
Breed: German Shepherd/ Aussie Cross
Age: Senior
Gender: Female
Description: Belle is a senior German Shepherd/Australian Shepherd mix, healthy and fit, just older. This sweet dog came to rescue when her owner became homeless, and with her manners, her well adjusted personality, and the wisdom she has, it's apparent she was loved. Belle is house trained, not a chewer, and excellent with kids, cats and dogs. She came from a home with acreage and would love to have space to move freely about again. For now, she's making due with daily walks that she very much loves. Belle went through 4H training with a child and won the blue ribbon. There's nothing this dog won't do, if you ask her to-- she's a people pleaser, and it's second nature to her to make you happy. Belle is about 50 pounds. She's going to make some person or family very happy they chose her for the remainder of her life.

Requirements: No special requirements

Name: Bessie
Breed: Yellow Lab Cross
Age: Adult
Gender: Female
Description: Bessie is a sweetheart of a Lab girl who has all the traits that Lab lovers adore...melting brown eyes, soft coat, loyal best friend personality. That's Bessie! She is just all around a good-natured, sweet dog who adores everyone she meets. Kids, cats, other dogs....nothing fazes her. She is housetrained on a schedule, crates nicely for the workday, and minds her manners in the house well. She is working on losing a few pounds (aren't we all!), but she loves her walks and gets so excited to see the leash come out. She is about 3-4 years old, 60 lbs fully grown. Bessie is heartworm positive and being treated before adoption.

Requirements: No special requirements

You can email kladams4545@gmail.com with questions and for a preadopt application. This dog has been spayed/neutered, vaccinated as age appropriate, tested for heartworm disease if age appropriate, and dewormed.

This HHK9 canine has tested positive for a heartworm or tick borne disease and treatment will be done through our vet before an adoption is finalized, so that we can do our part to ensure a healthy happy dog joins your home. Heartworm treatment consists of a 2 day treatment at the vet followed by 4 weeks of restricted activity, and placement timing is on an individual case by case at the comfort level of the foster and adopter. Tick diseases are treated through oral antibiotics sent home with an adopter by the rescue.

Name: Blitz
Breed: German Shepherd
Age: Adult
Gender: Male
Description: Blitz is a handsome German Shepherd boy with a love of playing with toys. He is happiest with a ball in his mouth and some space to run around and burn his energy off. Blitz found his way into a local impound the result of lack of training and an open fence gate causing him to chase and bite a child in play. Shepherds are herding breeds after all and he was doing what he thought was all in good fun! He needs a home with no kids due to his size, lack of training, and previous bite. Blitz is housetrained, crates well, minds his manners well in the house, and is working on learning his basic commands. He is a very smart boy and it shows in how quickly he picks things up...he learned he needed to drop the tennis ball and sit for it to be thrown again in about 10 minutes. His last owner loved him and cared for him well but skipped the training and shepherds need both love and training to be successful, well-mannered companions. He would do best in a home with shepherd experience, time to train, and the ability to manage his wild side with training and exercise. He does require a physically fenced yard or a home outside the city with acreage he can be trained to stay on. He is not good with cats and would be best placed as an only dog.

Requirements: Experienced Home Required. No cats. Physically fenced yard or acreage

Name: Bosco
Breed: German Shepherd/ Rottweiler Cross
Age: Adult
Gender: Male
Description: Bosco is a big, handsome 3-4 year old Rottie/Shepherd mix who is loyal, loving, and quite the goofball. He is happiest following his person around for hours on end, finding some funny mischief to get into, and always is ready for a scratch and some love. Bosco came into rescue with serious hip issues that made it difficult for him to lead a normal life. We expected him to need surgery but as it turned out his issues are too severe even for surgery to correct. He has little to no muscle in his back legs making surgery a poor choice.  Bosco is on lifelong pain management, joint supplements, and injections of Adequan (synthetic joint medication). Now this sounds like a pretty poor quality of life, nope, not for Bosco! He is so happy to be pain free for the first time in a long time that he plays like a puppy, he runs, he fetches, he counter surfs (naughty boy!), and is overjoyed for every minute he gets to spend having fun. We don't know what his life holds long term. He might eventually be a surgery candidate, he might not. He might live a shorter life due to the severity of his injuries or he might live a normal lifespan. We simply cannot predict so he needs an adopter who is willing to commit to whatever his life brings and willing and able to emotionally and financially commit to continuing to manage his pain and hips so he can live pain-free. Bosco is excellent with other dogs, adores people of all ages, and has never met a stranger, only new best friends. He does need a cat-free home. He is housetrained, crates well for the workday, loves to chew on bones and toys. (Photo courtesy of Ciao Bella Photography)

Requirements: Medical special needs. No cats

Name: Bounce
Breed: Pit Bull Cross
Age: Adult
Gender: Female
Description: Did you say car ride?! Yes! Say those magic words and you have a friend for life in Bounce. Okay, let's be real. In her mind any person who opens their car door for her is her bestie in her mind. While she does enjoy a leasurely stroll, her heart is set on driving around town. Bounce is the type of dog that knows when it's okay to be crazy and when it's time to lay down and chew a bone. She minds her manners almost perfectly in the house. She is house trained, crate trained, doesn't chew up anything she's not supposed to, and not a barker unless she really needs to go out. Bounce came into rescue because she was left unsupervised with a toddler and the toddler sustained a nip/scratch. With no other information about the situation, Bounce was blamed and she was no longer wanted. Bounce lives with cats and dogs in her foster home. The cats she became friends with right away, but the dogs took a slower introduction. She grew up as an only dog, so deep down she would love to be an only dog again and not have to share her stuff or her people's attention. That's not to say she hasn't made any canine friends, she's just picky about who she likes (Aren't we all?). Because of the unknown circumstances of the nip on the small child, we are seeking an adult home for her just as a precaution. If you are looking for a snuggly, adorable companion to share your home, your couch, and your adventures, please consider Bounce. She will bring so much happiness to your life..

Requirements: Adopter must own home due to breed mix. No kids. Prefers to be the only dog.

Name: Brewski & Buddy
Breed: Shepherd/ Husky Crosses
Age: Seniors
Gender: Male & Female
Description: Brewski ( with white) and Buddy ( black and tan) are a bonded pair of 10-year-old Shepherd/Husky mixes, seeking new homes after their prior owner was no longer able to care for them. Often we consider splitting up the pairs, but after 10 years together, we'd love for them to stay together. House trained, no chewing, reliable left loose, mild-mannered, and agreeable to other dogs in the home, they absolutely love walks and being a part of things still. They are 42 pounds each right now, mildly underweight. Good with cats, dogs, and kids of all ages, these two are polite and well-mannered dogs who have shown no aggression nor resource guarding. They were well raised and trained, and it shows. They love the one mile walks they get daily, and keep up well. Neither are barkers, although Buddy sometimes tries to tell you something you wish you could understand. Brewski is quicker to open up and let you into her heart, and with a little time, Buddy does as well. They love to hang out outside in the fenced yard on a sunny day, and then come back in and be with their people. They are in good health with no restrictions. Please consider a pair of lovely dogs who need a home.

Name: Brownie
Breed: Shepherd/Beagle Cross
Age: Young Adult
Gender: Male
Description: Brownie is a medium size young adult Beagle/Shepherd type mix who does well with a busy home. He enjoys kids, does very well with other dogs and cats, and handles a little bit of chaos in stride. He absolutely loves the other dogs at his foster home, and is medium energy, so does need an adopter willing to do daily walks or playtime. He is doing well with house training and is crated when alone. He can be a little shy at first, but within minutes is making himself at home in your lap, covering you with kisses. Brownie was someone's backyard dog before so does need more training, but he's a smart dog who catches on quickly and works hard to keep his people happy. He's about 35 pounds.

Requirements: No special requirements

Name: Buddy
Breed: Black Lab Cross
Age: Senior
Gender: Male
Description: Buddy is a senior ( 8 years) Lab mix, smaller and shorter than a purebred Lab, seeking a calmer adult home he can join. That being said, he sure enjoys the company of other dogs, loves to gently play with the other old Lab at his foster home. He is reliably house trained, crate trained, not a barker, and listens when asked to do something. He is okay with visiting kids, but prefers to live with adults, and doesn't enjoy a home with a lot of people coming and going often. Buddy loves walks and toys and bones. He'd do perfectly keeping company another old dog who wants a buddy, or a person wanting a mellow middle aged Lab. Buddy is fine with cats. He has been treated for heartworm.

Name: Bugs Buddy
Breed: Yellow Lab Cross
Age: Young Adult
Gender: Male
Description: Bugs Buddy is a 1 year old Lab mix, a very outgoing dog who would be thrilled to death to find a home with another playful dog. He absolutely loves people, but he is in his element playing chase and wrestling outside in the yard with other dogs. Bugs Buddy makes friends very easily with other dogs, and sure loves kids as well. Previously an outside dog, he is picking up the house training and is crated when left alone. He is smart, needs more training time but responds well, and would do best in a home with yard space or land and another dog to play with. His ideal adopter would also believe in obedience training and the benefits of it for a smart, high energy, outgoing dog.

Name: Cassie
Breed: Border Collie/ Lab Cross
Age: Adult
Gender: Female
Description: Cassie is an adult female Border Collie/Lab, a gentle and easy going girl with a playful and active streak as well--- she loves nothing more than running zoomies at the dog park, or going for off leash hikes. She's smart, happy to please people, and has the cheerful and friendly personality of a Lab with the Border Collie brain. She loves kids and other dogs. She is learning the house training, crates for the workday, and was previously a stray.

Name: Cato
Breed: Shepherd/ Terrier/ Bully Cross
Age: Young Adult
Gender: Male
Description: Cato is an adolescent mixed up mutt pup who wants to shake your paw!  This guy is Mr. Friendly and loves everyone he meets at first snuggle.  He is social, outgoing, happy to be with his people, and is always up for what his people are doing.  Going for a walk, camping, swimming (though he prefers not to be in the water!), or just hanging out snuggling up for a movie and a few stolen pieces of popcorn.  He is a 3-legged pup but we almost forget to even mention that because it doesn't slow him down at all!  He runs, plays, hikes, and jumps just as well as any of his 4-legged friends. Cato is good with dogs, needs a home without cats, and fine with older kids.  He is housetrained, knows his basic manners, and is working on learning more tricks.  He loves to learn and melts with happiness when he is told he's a "good boy".  So why has this amazing dog grown up in the shelter/rescue system?  Cato has significant separation anxiety.  What this means for his adopters is that investing in a super sturdy crate is a necessity as well as a willingness and experience to continue behavioral meds and training.  He would benefit greatly from someone home more often than not or able to break up his crate time with a lunch break let-out or dog walker.  He has made a ton of progress anxiety wise and does so well at his foster home now that we know in a forever home that commits to him and his training needs he will be so successful.  All he needs now is someone to take a chance on an adorable little mutt pup who promises a lifetime of paw shakes and a willingness to follow on any adventure no matter how crazy.

Requirements: Home committed to training and working with the separation anxiety. No cats.

Description: Chopper is a 10 month old, 35 pound male Shepherd/Lab/? mix. This guy fits in anywhere. He's playful without being too hyper, loves kids, cats and other dogs, and is already house and crate trained. He's a well adjusted and social dog you can bring anywhere. He loves his toys and is used to daily walks, which he hopes to continue in a new home.

Name: Clark
Breed: Pit Bull/ Shepherd Cross
Age: Young Adult
Gender: Male
Description: Clark is a mixed up mutt whose initial shyness hides an incredibly loyal, loving companion.  He is slow to warm up to people, nervous in new social situations, but when he's in his element at home he is a silly, fun-loving, loyal, snuggle buddy.  Clark has been bounced around a lot in his short life and he needs a home that will show him some stability and build his confidence up.  He is never mean, never nippy, just nervous.  He feeds off a confident owner.  If you are confident about something, he bravely puts on a confident face.  If you are nervous, then he acts more nervous and insecure.  He is tolerant of other dogs but gets a little insecure around really bossy males so best with more submissive males, females of any demeanor, or as an only dog.  He is much more of a people dog than anything.  He is not known with cats.  Given his shy nature he would be best in an older child/adult home.  Clark is well housetrained and reliable left loose for the workday (he prefers being left loose to a crate).  Clark is not a dog who shows well at a first meeting...he clings to his foster family and ignores the new people but for someone willing to take him home, give him a few weeks to adjust, he will be their new best friend.

Requirements: Adopter must own home due to breed mix. Older child/adult home.

Name: Connie (Adoption Pending!)
Breed: Sheltie/ Cattle Dog
Age: Young Adult
Gender: Female
Description: Connie is a 6 month female Sheltie/Cattle Dog mix, who of course is very very smart-- house trained and crate trained already-- and has a peppy, happy attitude. She does jump up, which her foster is working on, and seems happiest in a home with a canine companion to follow. She is good with cats. Bigger dogs can make her a little shy for a few minutes, but once she knows they are kind she is happy to be friends with them. Connie is happiest when she is learning something new or practicing a skill, she likes to work her brain. Since she came from a more rural setting we are hoping for a home with yard space for her.

Name: Cotton
Breed: Chihuahua/Terrier Cross
Age: Young Adult
Gender: Female
Description: Cotton is a 12 pound Chihuahua/Terrier mix, a very sweet, quiet, humble little dog who was captured after living in the woods alone for several months. She is a little shy by nature, but can't resist a lap or a pair of arms open to her. Sunbathing in the windows, curling up on laps, being petted and held, and going for short walks ( she is adjusting to the cold) are favorites. She is doing well with house training and is left in a gated room when alone. Since she is used to a calmer, predictable adult home, that's what we are hoping for her. She's excellent with other pets. If you have a quiet, calm home and someone wanting a lap dog, she's your girl.

Name: Daisy
Breed: Dalmatian Cross
Age: Young Adult
Gender: Female
Description: Daisy is a skittish and shy petite female Dalmation, previously an unclaimed stray from KY, who needs a very specific and special home. She is never mean, but her fear of new people is rooted very deeply inside her. She took almost 6 months to come up to her foster for pets, although she loves walks so much that it didn't take long for her to crawl up and shove her head through the slip lead to be able to go for a walk to the park. Daisy loves leash walks, and loves running at the dog park. Where Daisy is very afraid of people, she adores other dogs, and loves to play and run and chase with them. She plays like a puppy when it's dogs and no stranger people. She is reliably house trained, will crate but does fine gated into the bedroom for the workday, and is very easy to live with. She does bark when new people come into the house, then bolts into the bedroom to hide. She will likely never be a 'normal' dog, but she has her endearing qualities and we love her. She does require a home with a fenced yard and another dog. She's excellent with cats.

Requirements: Fenced yard and another dog in the home

Name: Daja
Breed: Husky/Shepherd Cross
Age: Adult
Gender: Female
Description: Daja is a 6 year old, 60 pound Shepherd/Husky mix girl who came into the pound shot and hurt, thin, and clearly been on her own for awhile... and she loves people so much that the fact she was alone must have been the hardest part. The bullet just grazed her, so no permanent damage, but our guess was she was trying to get to someone's house and was shot on the property. She's a mellow, easy going dog who does well with people, dogs and cats. She loves walks, and walks nicely on the leash, and does well at parks and out and about. Housetraining was easily done at her foster home, and she crates for the workday, although likely doesn't need a crate long term. She's a special one. Only because she came from a rural area, we are looking for a home with yard space for her please.

Name: Dewey
Breed: Pit Bull
Age: Young Adult
Gender: Male
Description: You know those bad Pit Bull stereotypes you have heard? Well, Dewey here puts every one of them to shame with his exceptional personality and sweetness. This boy is set on changing everyone's mind about the big, bad Pit Bull and he's going to do it by kissing and loving on every person he meets. Because that's Dewey. Dewey loves everyone instantly. Dog or person, Dewey thinks whoever he meets is his newest best friend and he's so excited to meet them and start playing and getting cuddles. Speaking of cuddles, Dewey is a champion snuggler. If medals were given out for best snuggler, Dewey would win gold! He loves his walks and playtime and is hoping his forever home will commit to a lot of toys and walks/runs along with the cuddles. He's young still so has energy to burn and a bit of a mischievous streak when he doesn't get his energy out...somehow the kleenex box exploded in the living room while his foster mom was in the shower, Dewey doesn't know what happened but its lucky he was there to keep anything else from spontaneous combustion.:) No cats for this boy please, they're just too much fun to chase.  Dewey is housetrained on a schedule, crates for the workday well, not been a barker, and minds his house manners well. He does require a physically fenced yard due to some "Houdini" moves when tied out. If you're looking for a sweet-as-can-be, energetic buddy to keep you warm on cold nights and active and having fun, consider Dewey. We are all in love with him.

Requirements: Adopter must own home due to breed. No cas. Fenced yard

Name: Elf (aka Donnie)
Breed: Black Lab Cross
Age: Young Adult
Gender: Male
Description: Elf, formerly known as Donnie, is a 35 pound young adult ( 1 year old) Lab mix, who will always and forever look like a Lab puppy. He is very smart, and a soft and sensitive personality make training a breeze. He will do anything to avoid being in trouble. Elf was previously a stray and spent several months at the pound, and we were happily surprised at how quickly he learned to be a happy house dog. He is house trained ( with the exception of day one of having the Christmas tree up), crated for the workday, loves walks and walks very nicely on the leash. He is not much of a barker and gets along very well with kids, cats and dogs. His favorite activity of the day is the walk to the dog park to play with the other dogs. He is a little shy at first with new people and new dogs, but offer some treats and some patience and he warms up quickly. He loves people and dogs, just isn't sure what to think if new people come on too quickly and then hides behind his foster's legs. He's a really good boy who deserves a really exceptional home.

Name: Faber
Breed: Lab/ Pointer Cross
Age: Adult
Gender: Male
Description: Faber is an adult male Lab/Pointer type mix, probably about 10 breeds mixed in, all rolled together to create a fun, happy, playful big dog who is seeking a home with a fenced yard preferably, and someone to commit to daily physical playtime and walks. Faber came to rescue skinny, hairless, weak and sad, and has blossomed into a healthy, playful, fit dog. His exercise needs are beyond what his current caretaker can handle physically, as he does still jump up sometimes in play, and needs some leash manners. He loves kids, loves meeting new people, lives with a cat, and does well with other dogs. He could use some leash socialization skills with other dogs, he comes on too strong, but loves off leash playtime at a dog park. Faber is house trained, crate trained, and minds his manners in the house. His only lasting physical scars from his past are small areas on his rear end where the hair may never grow back since the skin was so scarred. He carries no emotional scars, his life is all about making new friends, having fun, and living in the moment.

Name: Fern
Breed: Hound/ Shepherd Cross
Age: Adult
Gender: Female
Description: Hello. I'm Fern. I'm part shepherd and part hound. I am five years old. I LOVE kids, being petted, and hanging around people. I become nervous around other dogs, but do well with cats. I am looking for a family to love me, help me become more socialized, and give me the time I deserve. My perfect home would have a fenced yard or acreage, no other dogs, and be all right with a homebody dog who doesn't care to share my time with other canines. I would be happy sharing with kids and cats. I am house trained and well mannered. Please pick me!

Requirements: Fenced yard or acreage. No other dogs.

Name: Finnick
Breed: German Shepherd
Age: Young Adult
Gender: Male
Description: Finnick is a silly, exhuberant German Shepherd who came into the pound a complete mess…emaciated to the point he couldn’t stand, sick, covered in mange and infection. A few months with some food, TLC, and good vet care and this boy is a different dog both inside and out. Gone is the dog who was too weak to move and here is the puppy who can play for hours and hours on end and makes a fantastic running partner! An active home who wants an active pup to join in their adventures would be perfect for him. Finn is working on his housetraining, crates for the workday well (though can be a bit vocal about his desire to go with you!), and is working on his house manners. Given the neglect he suffer, he likely never got to enjoy being a puppy so is making up for lost time. He is a BIG perpetual puppy! He loves other dogs and would be an excellent canine companion and playmate. He is not good with cats. Finn needs some training, needs to gain some weight and fill out still, but with a little polishing this boy is going to shine.

Requirements: No cats.

Name: Flounder

Description: Flounder is a chubby, smiley, goofball of a pup. She is happiest racing around the yard with a toy in her mouth and then divebombing for a lap to snuggle in. This girl is a world class snuggler! She is a little hesitant at first, a little more timid but give her a few kind words and a treat and she melts like putty in your lap for love. Flounder is working on her housetraining and crates well for the workday. She is working on learning what is hers to chew and what is not, loves bones and loves toys. Flounder loves walks and is pretty good on the leash already. She is good with kids though a bit much for the real little ones, absolutely adores other dogs, and is fine with cats. She is a sweet, well-started pup looking for a home who wants to finish up the training with her. She is about 6-7 months old and will be a large dog as an adult.

Name: Girly
Breed: Cattle Dog/ Corgi Cross
Age: Adult
Gender: Female
Description: Girly is an adult female Cattle Dog/Corgi mix, previously a feral dog whose life consisted of making sure her babies were safe and fed, finding shelter, and finding food. However, deep inside Girly, she wants to be a pet, so she allowed herself to be caught and has spent the past 3 months in foster care gaining confidence and learning how to be a pet. She is learning the house training, crates just fine, and is good with other dogs. She would do best in a home with a fenced yard ( securely fenced) and experience with shy dogs. She's full grown at about 35 pounds, still lap dog sized. We see daily progress and know what an amazing little companion she'll be.

Requirements: Securely fenced yard. Experience with shy dogs

Name: Kiko
Breed: Black Lab/ Pit Bull Cross
Age: Adult
Gender: Male
Description: Kiko is a 5 year old Lab mix (perhaps with some bully breed in there. We aren't sure) surrendered to rescue after his barn home closed down and he (and his owners) were left homeless. He has been well loved his whole life and it shows in how social, friendly, and well-adjusted he is. Kiko does have some neurological damage that have resulted in him being mostly blind. He has a small amount of vision out of his right eye that helps him navigate and see large objects. While this to us humans seems like a huge obstacle, to Kiko its just who he is and he navigates his world nicely once he is used to it. Sure there's some running into things and stairs in the dark are a no-go, but even when startled he has been nothing but sweet and gentle. Kiko lives for attention and pets. He would happily let you pet him until your arm fell off and still be begging for 5 more minutes of loving. He is good with other dogs (though prefers them laid back like himself), fine with cats, birds, and livestock. He is working on his housetraining, crates well for the workday, and is learning the house manners after having been a previously outdoor dog. Kiko does require a physically fenced yard for his own safety.

Requirements: Fenced yard.

Description: Lollipop is a sweet shepherd/aussie type mix with manners, good looks, smarts, and a lot of love to share with a forever family. She is housetrained, crates for the workday well in a reinforced/sturdy kennel (she can escape the regular ones), minds her manners well in the house, gets along well with dogs, and is good with older kids. Lollie has one drawback...she's terrified of storms. She does very well when given a prescription anti-anxiety medication shortly before a storm and is given a safe place in the basement in her crate to call her own during stormy weather but needs a home committed to this otherwise she is destructive. Lollie loves to go for walks and would be happiest in a home that would walk her daily.  She is an overall more mellow girl who loves her yard time, hanging out with her people, and comfy dog beds. She is just about the perfect dog and we can't say enough good things about this little love. Lollie is about 5 years old, 50 lbs.

Requirements: Home willing to work with the storm anxiety

Heartworm treatment consists of a 2 day treatment at the vet followed by 4 weeks of restricted activity, and placement timing is on an individual case by case at the comfort level of the foster and adopter. Tick diseases are treated through oral antibiotics sent home with an adopter by the rescue.

Name: Lucy
Breed: French Mastiff
Age: Young Adult

Description: Lucy is a young adult female French Mastiff, also known as Dogue de Bordeaux, surrendered by her prior owner after living for a year chained in the backyard. She came in emaciated, bug bites all over her ears, and scared, and has quickly turned her life around. She's gaining weight well, ears are healing up, and she quickly shed the shyness. She is an outgoing, curious, very friendly dog who loves playing and romping with the other dogs, is curiously sweet with the cat but does expect her to play, and loves to meet new people. Part of her breed is to be a little cautious with new people at first, so an adopter who will continue to train and socialize is ideal. She's a very good natured and happy young dog who is living out now the puppyhood she missed. She is doing well with house training, crates when alone, and would benefit from obedience-- she is VERY strong on the leash. Her amazing attitude is unbeatable.

She is beyond thrilled to be back in the house as a loved family member. She is friendly to everyone, excellent with dogs, kids and cats.  Her housetraining and cratetraining are solid (though with any dog expect a transition) An old injury caused glaucoma in one eye which was recently removed but she is healed up and ready to go on to a forever home as a beautiful one-eyed dog!  Mandy loves walks and toys and peps up to play but is always down for some couch snuggles as well.  She is an absolute gem.  She's a gentle, friendly dog who works very hard to do the right thing and make you happy.

Description: Oakley is a young adult, Belgian Malinois who has seen a lot in his short life. Quick movements, hands reaching towards him sends him to the ground expecting the worst and belly crawling away to avoid being hurt. Give him a few weeks to settle in, build up trust, and gain some confidence and you have yourself a total puppy of a dog who loves to run, play, fetch, swim, and have a blast. He is the stereotypical super smart, high energy Malinois. He is still extremely nervous outside his comfort zone and with new people so looking for a home who will do some serious confidence building and training to show him that the world is a safe place and new people are not to be feared and who wants a high energy dog to train and have fun with. Oakley is excellent with other large breed dogs and loves to play with them once he knows them. Oakley is working on his housetraining, crates for the workday, and is learning to mind his manners in the house which he does fairly well at as long as his energy is burned out. He would be best in an experienced, adult home who will continue to train and socialize him properly. He does require a physically fenced yard. (Photo courtesy of CiaoBella Photography)

He would absolutely excel in a dog sport or trick training and needs something similar to keep him busy. He already knows his basics and is eager to learn more. Typical to his breeds, if he is not kept mentally and physically active he finds his own fun and its never good so he is seeking an active home who wants a dog to do things with beyond the norm. He can be very mouthy and excitable but calms down with a confident handler who will not feed into and allow the over excitability. Phantom is excellent with other large breed dogs and loves to play. He would love a home with another high energy, like-minded companion to pal around and play with. He is not good with cats or small animals. Phantom has an off-switch when tired out and is quite the velcro boy. Cuddles are a runner up favorite to learning and playing. If you are an active home seeking a super smart dog to train and work with, Phantom would love to meet you!

Requirements: No cats. A strong commitment to daily physical and mental exercise. Adult/older child (12+) home.

You can email laurahhk9@gmail.com with questions and for a preadopt application. This dog has been spayed/neutered, vaccinated as age appropriate, tested for heartworm disease if age appropriate, and dewormed.

Name: Pippy
Breed: Shepherd Cross
Age: Adult
Gender: Female
Description: Pippy is an adult female petite Shepherd mix, full grown at about 38 pounds and 20 inches at the shoulder. She is an intense, athletic, working minded dog who would thrive with a job to do. She has a lot of positives. Pippy is house trained and crate trained, preferring a wire crate to a plastic one. She knows some commands ( sit, stay, Potty, stay in the house, and she pauses at the door before exiting) and loves clicker training and the rewards for listening. Pippy enjoys toys and is good at entertaining herself. Pippy is looking for a home with time to continue training and socializing in a safe environment, as she is reactive to other dogs on leash, and although she plays well with some dogs, the play can escalate quickly into rowdiness that she can't control. Her ideal home would have her as the only pet, with a lot of exercise, and continued training. The vet terrifies her, so she is practicing gaining bravery with visits there. Pippy is smart and highly trainable, but also aloof sometimes, and too much touch and praise overstimulates her into needing to run laps/zoomies to balance herself again, or move away from the contact. For someone with experience with dogs and having a job for her, she is going to be a perfect dog. We suggest perhaps trying Nose work with her, a scent tracking activity, which is individual to the dog and requires focus and independent thinking. A kind, patient adopter who can redirect some of the inappropriate behaviors is ideal. She does require a home with yard space and no shared walls ( apartment).

Requirements: Experienced home. Home with yard space.

Name: Pirate
Breed: Husky Malamute Cross
Age: Young Adult
Gender: Male
Description: Pirate is a one-eyed, fluffball of a husky/malamute mix with a true passion for life. This dog loves everything life has to offer…toys, treats, swimming, walks/runs, playing in the yard, other dogs, and then happily curling up on a fluffy dog bed to chill with his people. He is a high-energy dog, typical husky so needs an active home who will tire him out physically and mentally. He loves to learn tricks and commands when there are treats involved otherwise, typical husky, he’s hit or miss depending on what he wants to do. He’s stubborn, silly, and has a naughty streak a mile long that makes his foster family laugh. His cute face saves him from trouble every time though. Pirate is working on his housetraining, crates for the workday but needs a shove to get him in there, and is working on learning how to behave in a house. He is excellent with other dogs, needs a home without cats or small animals, and is best suited to a home with older, respectful kids who will take an active role in his training otherwise he tends to be too bossy and pushy with them. He does require a fenced yard due to his sight limitations. Pirate came into the pound with a dead eyeball caused by severe lens wasting that is likely the result of genetics. His other eye is losing vision though we are slowing the progression of vision loss with daily eyedrops.  There will be a point in the future where he becomes blind.  Now to us that sounds like a terrible fate but to Pirate it doesn't matter if things are getting blurrier and he isn't seeing as well.  He loves everything about life and everything it has to offer him.  He has a perpetual happy smile on his face.

Requirements: No cats. Fenced yard.

Name: Pumpkin (Adoption Pending!)
Breed: Terrier/ Corgi Cross
Age: Young Adult
Gender: Female
Description: Pumpkin is an adult female Rat Terrier mix, maybe some Corgi, who just has the best attitude. Nothing bothers her. She handles change and chaos like a pro, is very friendly and easy going, and gets along with every animal and human she meets. She seems to be house trained, her foster has her on a routine for outside, and she is crated when alone. Pumpkin loves walks, sitting alongside the top of the couch like a cat, sunning herself, and being a good girl so she can hear those magic words. She's good with kids, dogs and cats.

Name: Rex
Breed: Pit Bull/ Shepherd Cross
Age: Young Adult
Gender: Male
Description: Rex is a young male Pit Bull/Shepherd mix who wears his heart on his sleeve. A sweet, gentle boy this guy hands out kisses and cuddles to everyone he comes across. He’s never once met a stranger, only his newest best friends. He sure has a lot going for him…housetrained, smart, knows basic obedience and a few tricks, minds his manners well in the house, and has incredible social skills. Rex is a social butterfly, happy to play with every dog he meets and greet every person. He is excellent with other dogs and loves to play with them. He’s active and playful without being hyper and is happy to relax on the couch after he gets a long walk and some playtime. Rex does have a downside…he has pretty severe separation anxiety. What that means in a home for Rex is that we are looking for someone who is home more often than not, willing to invest in a sturdy, reinforced crate for when they are gone, and someone who is willing to continue the training to minimize the anxiety when they leave. This is a tall order, we know, but Rex is extremely worth it. He has one of the kindest hearts we’ve ever come across in rescue. He is everyone’s best friend. Photo courtesy of Ciao Bella Photography.

Requirements: An adopter who is home home more often than not, willing to invest in an "indestructible" kennel, and will continue training for the separation anxiety.

You can email laurahhk9@gmail.com with questions and for a preadopt application. This dog has been spayed/neutered, vaccinated as age appropriate, tested for heartworm disease if age appropriate, and dewormed.

Name: Ria
Breed: Belgian Malinois/ Shepherd Cross
Age: Young Adult
Gender: Female
Description: Ria is a young adult Belgian Malinois mix with a soft nature, a serious side that makes training her a breeze, and an equally energetic, silly side that's always up for some fun!   She makes a fantastic running/walking partner and never turns down the chance to run around and be a goofball in the yard.  She is learning what toys are and is fascinated with them. Ria loves to learn and picks up training in a flash. She thrives on knowing what is expected of her and hearing that she is a "good girl". She is a young girl still at about 1-2 years old so she's got energy to burn but she works hard to remember her manners in the house. She is working on her housetraining and picking it up quickly. She crates for the workday though is an expert Houdini at escaping the typical wire/plastic crates so needs a reinforced crate. Ria is excellent with other dogs but needs a home without cats (they're far too fun to chase!).  She would love an active home who wants a dog to take with on all their adventures.

Requirements: No cats.

Name: Rose
Breed: Shepherd Cross
Age: Adult
Gender: Female
Description: Rose is a medium size female adult Shepherd mix, and although she's mature enough to have the house training and crate training solidly down, when it comes to play time, she is all puppy. She loves to run and wrestle and have a fun time, and enjoys playing with people and other dogs who can keep up with her more rowdy and excited play. She is a medium-high activity dog who relies on daily walks as well as daily romp and play time. Rose is very friendly, loves meeting new people and about, and is also very cuddly and affectionate after her play time. She's a smart, silly dog who enjoys life a lot. Although she is not mean with cats, she does enjoy chase if they run, so a home without cats is ideal. She is good with children.

Name: Sam
Breed: Viszla Cross
Age: Senior
Gender: Male
Description: Sam is a senior ( 9 years) Viszla mix dog who needs a new home with not so much kid commotion. He is never aggressive or dominant, but the addition of small children to his life has resulted in some anxiety that shows with always being on the lookout for food, including that in the kids hands. When the kids go to bed he relaxes and settles back into his old self, the more mellow and calm guy. He is house trained, loves walks, is well trained inside and would be a perfect companion for someone who has kids that visit or no kids. He just wants a peaceful place for his senior years. He absolutely loves to sit outside so a home with yard space is ideal.

She is a conversation starter because she can't pass anyone on the street without saying hello. She's a very sweet dog. House training is going very well, and she is crated for the workday. That being said, the Husky in her means she would do best with a fenced yard or being leashed outside. She is house trained, crate trained, excellent with kids and other dogs. We are finding out about cats. This beautiful dog so badly wants her own home and family.

Name: Stevie
Breed: Lab/ Pointer Cross
Age: Puppy
Gender: Female
Description: Stevie is a sweet, snuggly little puppy whose initial shy side hides a little girl who loves nothing more than a good snuggle, some playtime, and treats! This little pup was an unclaimed stray and made her way to rescue to find her forever home. She is good with dogs, cats, and kids and loves everyone. She is working on her housetraining and cratetraining but being a young pup she needs a home who wants to put in the time, patience, and training to teach her everything. Expect accidents, some possessions lost to puppy teething, lots of puppy snuggles and kisses, and plenty of playtime and love. She was born the end of September so about 10-12 weeks old, right now 15 lbs so going to be a medium to large sized dog as an adult. We are guessing Lab/ Pointer mix but parents are unknown.

Name: Stitch
Breed: Black Lab Cross
Age: Adult
Gender: Male
Description: Stitch is a young Black Lab mix with a passion for fetch!  He is smart and loves to learn...as long as you have a ball in your hand, Stitch will do anything for you. He is housetrained with a schedule, crates for the workday, knows what is appropriate to chew/what isn't, and minds his manners in the house well as long as he gets plenty of exercise. Stitch's biggest hurdle to adoption...he was run over by his owners as a puppy causing a broken hip that's been repaired with FHO surgery but also loss of bladder control. He can only hold his bladder about 4-5 hours max so needs a home with a doggy door, an outdoor setup, or a home willing and able to accommodate his potty needs. Stitch is excellent with other larger dogs, not good with kitties (he thinks they're fun to chase), and better with older kids who can take a role in his training. He would do best in a home who will show him firmly but lovingly that they are the boss otherwise he tries to test the limits a bit (typical teenager!). Stitch wants nothing more than to be loved. He loves to snuggle up on the couch, loves his people, and his favorite place after a nice long game of fetch is right by his foster mom's feet. He is a loving, smart, social Lab who has been waiting for a home for far too long.

Requirements: No cats. No young kids.

Name: Striker
Breed: Pit Bull
Age: Senior
Gender: Male
Description: Striker is a 9 year old male Pit Bull who came to rescue after spending 11 months in animal control, which says a lot about his character... not many dogs can maintain a friendly attitude and their sanity after that long in a kennel, but something about him persevered and during that, he charmed everyone he met. Now in a foster home, he is thriving. He loves blankets, lots of them, and is very mellow and relaxed in his crate but behaves himself equally well when left loose. Striker is house trained. His favorite toys are tennis balls, and he plays a mean game of fetch. He's about 60 lbs and is treat motivated which helps with training. He has not been around cats so would do best in a cat free home, and has done well with canine siblings at his foster home.

Requirements: Adopter must own home due to breed, no cats

Name: Timber
Breed: German Shepherd
Age: Young Adult
Gender: Male
Description: Timber is a stunning German Shepherd with brains and brawn. This is one big boy! Timber is looking for a home who understands and enjoys shepherds because he is all shepherd in personality. He needs an active home who will tire him out physically and mentally otherwise he gets bored and finds his own games which, while he enjoys, we promise you likely won't. He is smart as a whip and learns things in a flash and would love a home where that brain is put to good use. Timber needs a home who will lovingly and firmly set boundaries and rules for him. When he has a confident handler and he knows what is expected of him, he learns to toe the line but he's the kind of boy where if you give him an inch, he takes a mile. He is housetrained on a schedule, crates for the workday well though is vocal about it, and is working on learning his basic manners and how to be a good canine citizen.  Timber appears to have spent most of his life chained up and because of it has some issues on the leash that require a home very experienced and looking for a project dog to help him work through those issues. He is tolerant of other large breed dogs and not good with cats/small animals.  He does need an adult-only home.

Requirements: No cats. Experienced home required. Fenced yard or acreage

Tinker is a friendly, affectionate, lovable little dog who does well meeting new people and with dogs and cats. She of course loves piles of blankets, dog beds, laps. Coming from the south, this will be a rude awakening for her, these MN winters :) She's always up for a walk though.

Description: Titan is a handsome German Shepherd who is everything this breed should be...smart, social, loyal, watchful, and very driven. He loves to be trained, to be given something to do, and to be worked with. Titan loves his walks and playtime and being a high energy boy absolutely needs an outlet for his energy. He is tolerant of other dogs with proper, slow introductions but would do best as an only dog as he prefers to be the top dog and does not like to share. No cats, small animals, or birds for him please! He would do best in an adult/older chilen home who will firmly and lovingly set rules and boundaries for him. He loves and needs to know what is expected of him otherwise he tries to 'rule the roost'. He does have some resource guarding over food that is very trainable and manageable but needs a home willing and experienced to work with that. Titan is housetrained, crates well for the workday, minds his manners in the house well as long as he is tired out. He is about 3 years old, 75 lbs but very tall and lanky.

Name: Winks
Breed: Black Lab Cross
Age: Young Adult
Gender: Male
Description: Winks was found starving in a parking lot in the rain, laying on a small t-shirt.  He was emaciated, weighing only 17 pounds, and his head had been beaten badly on one side, causing severe eye damage.  Even in such an awful state, he belly crawled to his rescuers and gently kissed their hands.  But, that’s all history.  It’s over a month later, his eye was successfully removed, and he’s now 33 pounds!  He is blossoming into a wonderful little guy.  We estimate his age in the 7-9 month range based on his teeth.  He likely won’t grow too much more in height and weight; he’ll probably remain a mid-sized pup and adult.  He has been fostered in a family with a dog, cat, and two teenagers and does great with all.  There is nothing more he loves than initiating play with the resident dog!  He also loves toys (rope toys and marrow bones are his favorites) and laying on blankets or the dog bed.  He can be (understandably) hesitant with strangers and is still sometimes fearful of noises or quick movements.  And, he can startle a little when he doesn't see hands coming (blind side).  But, this is a dog that still loves people and is a champion cuddler.  Winks has been a very easy foster—he is completely house trained (though accidents can happen with any dog and a transition to a new home), kennels up like a champ without a peep, and is very gentle and easy going.  He hilariously sings for his food every morning and night (woooo woooo woooo)!  He’s a very special find and a bit unusual given his age.  He is playful but not at all wild, very easy to redirect with a replacement toy, and responds well to a simple ‘no’ if needed (like when he wants to nibble on your toes or socks).  He is extremely sweet and loving and has already come so far given his history.  The only remnant of his past is that he still belly crawls, but now it’s for fun and makes everyone laugh!  Winks needs a home to show him the love he missed out on those early months. He is so worth it.

Name: Zula
Breed: Shepherd Cross
Age: Young Adult
Gender: Female
Description: Zula is a young adult female Shepherd mix who is out for a good time, and to make new friends. This happy dog greets total strangers like long lost friends, and is a very well balanced, social, outgoing dog. She adores kids and enjoys chase and play with them. Zula also likes other dogs, but is a bit of a bossy player with them, so would enjoy a home with a dog who doesn't challenge play, someone to play run/chase and wrestle with, or a home as an only dog. She enjoys meeting new dogs out and about on walks and at the park. Zula does chase cats, so a home with no cats is ideal. She's house trained and crate trained already, knows some simple commands. Our favorite is that when she sits, she automatically offers a paw. Zula is a high energy, active dog and needs a home with yard space to run in as well as an adopter to continue training and exercising with her. This is a dog with so much potential.
